Silk Splendour: Textiles of China's Last Imperial Dynasty

The exhibition will feature garments from the 19th century reflecting the pomp and ceremony of Manchu court life and the Chinese aristocracy during China's last imperial dynasty from the Chinese textile collection of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. The Art Gallery recently received a large donation of superb quality Chinese costume from an American donor Helen Jahnke through the Council for Canadian American Relations. As well the Art Gallery just purchased an informal robe once worn by the Last Empress of China. Empress Wan Rang (1906-46), married the last emperor in 1922 when she was 17. The actress, Joan Chen, played her in the movie - The Last Emperor.

Hughes, Betty Goodwin, to Ed Burtynsky illustrate the immense diversity in collecting styles and approaches that can be found in our region. Open Space will be presenting suddenlyLISTEN's Lee/Adams/Donovan trio. The trio consists of Lee Pui Ming (pianist), Norman Adams (cello) and Erin Donovan (percussion). This adventurous ensemble, all the way from Halifax, will be presenting a concert of collaborative improvisation and original compositions. Drawing from a broad range of influences spanning from classical to contemporary, this ensemble stimulates, entertains and expands horizons. Their music is described as rich, spontaneous and emotionally charged. S. Pedersen from the Halifax Chronicle Herald described their concert as 'a pure experience, full of strangeness and astonishment.' In their improvisational practice, the Lee/Adams/Donovan trio creates an intimacy and closeness in the musical experience a kin to the idea of 'chamber music'. Norman Adams, the cellist for the group and suddenlyLISTEN's artistic director, describes it as experiencing '.being up close, and the intimacy that you can feel listening to 'music in a chamber' - a small place where you can be close to the musicians and feel where the music's coming from.' SALT Festival

Bringing together Canadian and international artists, SALT is an exciting and innovative two-day festival of contemporary music. In its second year, the festival features Victoria's new music ensemble, Tsilumos (tsil meaning 'sound' in Hebrew and lumos is Latin for 'light'), the University of Victoria Orchestra, as well as several renowned international guests. The festival will commence on Friday, March 2 at the University of Victoria with the UVic Orchestra and Ensemble Nikel. Under the direction of Ajtony Csaba, the orchestra will present the world premiere of Lovely Monster Reloaded by Bernhard Gander and the North American premiere of Chaya Czernowin's Zohar Iver (Blind Radiance) - a concerto for Ensemble Nikel (saxophone, electric guitar, piano and percussion) and orchestra. Czernowin will be in Victoria for the festival and will take part in a pre-performance talk. On Saturday, March 3, the SALT Festival - PART 2 will feature Tsilumos Ensemble (Joanna Hood, Ajtony Csaba, Daniel Peter Biro and Kris Covlin), Ensemble Nikel (Vincent Daoud, Yaron Deutsch, Tom De Cock, and Reto Staub), celebrated Victoria pianist, Tzenka Dianova, and Olaf Tzschoppe (Germany), member of Les Percussions de Strassburg and one of the greatest percussionists in the world. Taking place at Open Space, the Tsilumos Ensemble will present world premieres of new works by Chaya Czernowin (Professor of Composition at Harvard University) and Israeli composer Ruben Seroussi. Starting at 4pm and continuing late into the evening, audience members will have a chance to mingle with the composers and musicians while enjoying food and beverages designed specifically for this event by Victoria Spirits.

Open Space presents an open discussion forum with filmmaker/artist Rick Raxlen, and his guests Marilyn Brakhage and Peter Sandmark about the Future of Film. Starting at 2 pm, they will each make a short presentation of their thoughts on what the future holds for film, particularly as an art form, and then open it up to general discussion. Marilyn Brakhage will follow the discussion with projections of four short films by acclaimed experimental filmmaker, Stan Brakhage. A reception will follow at 4:30 pm. March Break at Craigdarroch Castle

Craigdarroch Castle is pleased to announce an exciting new series of March break programs for elementary school children, teens and young adults. Designed to bring history to life, sessions are divided into age ranges in order to target appropriate themes and topics. For elementary students, weekday classes will feature a guided I-spy tour of the Castle, a Victorian-style craft activity, snack and indoor/outdoor games. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are for ages 8-11. Tuesdays and Thursdays are for ages 5-7. $25 for 2.5 hours. (9:30 AM to noon.) Pre-registration and payment is required. Drop off starts at 9:20 and pickup is at noon. Parents are encouraged to register quickly, as each class will be limited to just 12 lucky children. After successfully launching in the fall, the Pacific Lounge at the Hotel Grand Pacific is happy to announce a new line-up of their popular Saturday afternoon 'Flights and Light Bites' tastings. The hour-long seminars offer locals the chance learn a little more about their favourite tipple, as they're taken through a flight of four different samples by an expert in the field, along with the tasting plate that the drinks have been paired with. Covering everything from wines from a single producer, through to award-winning whiskies, and themes such as 'sustainable wines,' the tastings are a fun, low-commitment alternative to full wine dinners or educational courses. Each Flights and Light Bites session starts at 4pm, running for approximately one hour. For just $20 plus tax, each guest receives at least four tasting pours of the featured beverages, along with a tasting plate with items such as charcuterie, cheese, olives and nuts, depending on the pairings. With just one seminar left in the inaugural line-up, the February 11th Dessert Wines event, dates and themes for the next five Flights and Light Bites have now been announced: February 25: Canadian Whisky Award Winners Lead by Whisky expert Iain Hooey, guests will experience the 2012 winners of the Canadian Whisky Awards and discover the merits of quality Rye Whisky. March 10: Sustainable Wines Sommelier Stuart Brown of Trialto Wine Group will take us through the rising trend and practices of making sustainable wines around the world. March 24: Sake Sake expert Patrick Ellis will explain the process of quality sake making and showcase some amazing products from Oregon's SakeOne. April 7: Tantalus Vineyards Participants will have the opportunity to be among the first to try the new vintages of the amazing wines from Tantalus Vineyards in the Okanagan. April 21: Port Sommeliers Jeremy Pott and Carmen Parry will take participants through the many different types of port and port production. You Say Goodbye, We Say Hello! Robots, Theatre and the Future of Humanity

Brazil-based electronics artist and robotics researcher Zaven Pare and UVic Japanese theatre specialist Cody Poulton will discuss recent collaborations between playwright Oriza Hirata and roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro in theatrical productions using robots and androids. One of Japan's leading dramatists and directors, Hirata is advisor to the Japanese cabinet on cultural and international affairs and recipient of the French Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Ishiguro is famous for making increasingly lifelike androids that are copies of real human beings, including of himself. He has been listed as one of the 15 Asian Scientists to Watch by Asian Scientist Magazine and his work was featured in the Bruce Willis film, Surrogates. Both Hirata and Ishiguro are faculty members at Osaka University. Pare and Poulton's presentation of Hirata and Ishiguro's work will include a screening of Hirata's short play Goodbye (Sayonara), featuring American actress Bryerly Long and Ishiguro's creation, Geminoid F.

Feng Xu recently published 'Looking for Work in Post-Socialist China: Governance, Active Job Seekers and the New Chinese Labour Market'. In this book she explores unemployment as one of the most politically explosive issues in China which gained further prominence as a result of the present global financial crisis. The novelty, urgency, and complexity of Chinese unemployment have compelled the government to experiment with policy initiatives that originate in the West. Xu argues that although China is not a liberal democracy, it has turned to neo-liberal forms of governance to deal with unemployment, which now function alongside pre-existing Chinese modes of governance. She examines the initiatives which represent China's attempt to institutionalize and humanize its approach to governance: these initiatives include training programmes; counselling; a web-based national labour-market information network; insurance; and using community (shequ) organizations as the base for new mechanisms of governance and informal job generation. Feng Xu is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. She is the author of Women Migrant Workers in China's Economic Reform (2000).
